Summer Job, Seasonal Job
  • Location United Kingdom
  • Accommodation Yes
  • Company Cafe@Calgary Arts
  • Type of job Hospitality
  • Salary £9.25 /hour

By Calgary Beach on the idyllic Isle of Mull off the West Coast of Scotland. The Cafe@Calgary Arts & Galleries and Calgary Art In Nature sculpture woodland walk - are all a part of the Calgary Farmhouse Self-catering

The job of Cook/Baker is for an experienced person as we are a small business and we need staff who are able to work on their own initiative and work alone if called for, catering training is preferable but not necessary if you have the necessary experience.

We are a small business and depend upon our enthusiastic cheerful and hard-working staff. There are approximately 10 staff members, most of whom have been with us for several years.  Up 4-5 staff will live here for the season and 4-5 live locally.

The Cook/Baker Job is to run the Cafe kitchen including ordering, menu planning & costings. You must be able to work on your own and cook the Cafe Food & Cakes with the help of the Cafe General assistant for veg prep & washing up.

The work is seasonal 35-42 hours per week over 5-6 days, extra days off/Holidays by arrangement.  During busy bank Holiday & Peak weeks 6 days work will be required, at other times 5 to 5 ½ days will be required to work from the end of March till the end of October.

The Cook/Baker is responsible for all food served in the café.

There is an opportunity to develop new exciting Cafe Lunch menus to supplement the Cakes & tearoom Baking Goods. We like to use local & Scottish Ingredients and homegrown seasonal produce as it becomes available.

There would also be the opportunity for the occasional, weekly or monthly pop up evening event through the summer. This could be specialty nights, BBQ, Curry, Fish n Chips, Pizza etc which makes the day to day less boring over the full summer season, again this is flexible and may only suit earlier or later in the year when less busy and have the time to do.

Calgary is a rural quiet location , perfect for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Sorry, no holidays can be taken during High Peak holiday times; Easter, Whit Week, July & August, as it can be difficult to find stand-in staff, but of course not impossible with plenty notice. Actual finishing date to be arranged, but will be until at least the end of October.

Wages are for experienced over 21 years old: £9.25 /hour plus holiday pay,

Holiday pay is paid at the end of the season on completion of the contract, and if sufficient notice has been worked. Live-in is available.

There is no mobile phone reception at Calgary Farmhouse, although it does work up the road or above our woodland walk or through the wifi. There is a Phone box up the road 50m.

The nearest village corner shop is 5 miles away and the supermarket is 12 miles away.  Calgary Farmhouse self-catering is in a fairly isolated area, (the nearest village Pub is 5 miles!) and 12 miles from the island town of Tobermory.  There is a bus service 3 times per day but no evening public transport (there are taxis from Tobermory).

We are truly unique, with an excellent location by a beautiful beach, and offer food and accommodation to a high standard in a relaxed manner. A measure of our success is being a high rate of return guests.  We do not supply uniforms, but expect staff to be casual smart at all times; Navy or Black and white clothing. We supply Calgary Aprons for Cafe and Calgary T-shirts.

With being a small business, we also expect a degree of flexibility within the staff, to cover others on days off/unforeseen circumstances that may be out with their job description at short notice.

If you would like to apply further please send as much information as possible, with references, and contact telephone numbers of past employers or e-mail addresses.

We will then, since it is such a long way to come for an interview, decide who looks best suited for the job, from what we receive in the post/email from you – so please do send photos if possible and from your references of course.

Please do not send your application if you do not have the necessary UK work experience or do not have the necessary Work Visa or current references. You will not be considered.

We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for applying for a job here at Calgary.
